OSSLT Prep - Parent Meeting November 14
Published on Oct 23, 2017 12:35

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Each year Ontario students in grade 10 write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).  This is a mandatory requirement for graduation and receiving an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.  This EQAO test assesses a student's reading and writing abilities according to government standards, and to pass, a score of 300 must be achieved.  If your child is currently in grade 10, he/she will be writing the test on April 10, 2018.

Although our school's success has improved over the years, statistically 20% of students are unsuccessful the first time they write the test.  The test is very structured and contains eight specific tasks to be written in two 75 minute time blocks.  This presents a challenge to many students regardless of their abilities.

Students with an Individual Education Plan will meet with their resource teacher to ensure the appropriate accommodations are in place for the test.  The test does not resemble a typical classroom structure or lesson; therefore, our school will prepare all students writing the test with sample lessons and strategies two weeks before they write.  As well, a free after school literacy course will run weekly in Semester Two.

Due to the nature of this high stakes test, we strongly encourage you and your child to attend a brief information session on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 from 7-8pm in the school cafetorium.   The details of the test will be outlined, a sample of the test will be conducted, and your questions will be answered.  Refreshments will also be served.

We look forward to meeting with you soon.  If you wish for more EQAO information, please visit www.eqao.com.

Yours in literacy,

St. Peter's OSSLT Team
